We started the journey from Moratuwa around 5.45AM and we used Panadura – Rathnapura route and from Rathnapura we headed towards Haputale. While we were passing Balangoda we decided to have our breakfast near Surathali Ella.
Neduntheevu or Neduntivu (Tamil: நெடுந்தீவு), also known by its Dutch name Delft, is an island in the Palk Strait, northern Sri Lanka. This island is named as Delft in the Admiralty Chart unlike the other islands in the area which are named with their Tamil names. The island’s area is 50 km² and it is roughly oval-shaped. Its length is 8 km and its maximum width about 6 km.
We planned our journey week after the Sinhala Hindu New Year. Although my wife’s father is from Deniyaya I haven’t been to that place. So i was excited and planned the journey to visit attractions in Deniyaya. We started our journey early as always and we were able to witness breathtaking scenery on the way to Deniyaya.
Bambarakanda Falls (also known as Bambarakele Falls) is the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka. With a height of 263 m (863 ft), it ranks as the 299th highest waterfall in the world. Situated in Kalupahana in the Badulla District, this waterfall is directly visible from the A4 Highway. The waterfall was formed by Kuda Oya, which is a branch of the Walawe River.
This was a very long trip and we drove 1200Km in 4 days First we went to Katharagama and Then Nuwaraeliya and then Trincomalee. So i have started route map from Nuwaraeliya. Road condition is very good till you pass Habarana but there are some road constructions going on Kantale to Trinco… Specially they are straitening the “Yaka Wanguwa”.
We started the journey from Colombo around 8AM and the crew was four. We used a Suzuki Swift as our transportation.The drive to Balapitiya was quite effortless and the Galle road was in pretty good shape. Although it is good be sure to stay in the speed limit. Because occasionally you find traffic cops waiting for you to speed!
But unfortunately there were heavy showers at night with extreme wind conditions. Our tent got damaged. Water came in to the tent and we had to take a decision and there were no alternative other than returning back to our Van. It was 11.30PM and we started walking on the rain to the Van. Phew! This was a once in a lifetime experience. I don’t think anybody have ever walked around 12AM inside Horton Plains.
Next Day was a big day for us as any of us haven’t been to Wilpattu National Park. Early morning we got up and headed to the park. Mr Chaminda Dissanayake, the owner of Kahala Jeep Safari gave us a great help arranging the best guides and the safari. I can strongly recommend him to anybody interest in a Wilpattu Safari.
