Climbing Perch(කාවයියා)

Anabas (Anabas Cloquet, 1816) also called climbing perch  is a genus of the bone fishes from familia Anabantidae from perciform Perciformes fish. In Sinhala this fish is called “කාවයියා”.

Fresh-water fishes have the length up to 20 cm. Anabas reside in both brackish and fresh water.Marking corpus is brown-green in colour and the belly is yellowish. The azygous fins have prickly beams.Anabas possess a labyrinth organ, a structure in the fish’s head which allows it to breathe atmospheric oxygen, and therefore can be out of water for an extended period of time (6–8 hours).
